A lot goes into packing for a vacation. The destination, the climate and weather you will experience, the culture and customs of the area, and the sites you will see are all things to consider when deciding what to pack or not to pack. Here are some questions and suggestions to consider when writing your packing list.
Fill these 6 categories:
Clothes ∙ Accessories ∙ Utilities
Gear ∙ Entertainment ∙ Documents
Gather these 3 items:
Weather Report. Average high, low and precipitation. During the final pack is when to check for day-specific temps, precipitation and concerns
Itinerary summary for review.
Dress code. Does the cruise ship or resort have a dress code? Are there special events like a concert, wedding, meeting, formal dinner, religious site visit or golf tee time, that requires special attire?
2-3 swimsuits and coverups.
2-4 short outfits unless planning many excursions where swimsuits aren't ideal.
Clips to secure swim suits on a balcony or dry-line. Clips or bands to secure towels on a chair.
A thermal wine glass or drink cup is nice in the hot sun, to keep beverages cool longer than a normal bar glass. Any beach or pool bar will typically refill it with your beverage of choice.
Good resorts have hairdryers, quality shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, lotion, steamers or irons, slippers, robes, umbrellas and beach towels, so you need to bring none of that.
Everything from the All-Inclusive List although the thermal cup can be problematic. If you wanted one, I would purchase it on the ship.
Multi-outlet extension cord WITHOUT surge protection. A surge protector will start a fire!
Clear over-the-door hanging pocket shoe holder to store bathroom items.
Several different motion sickness treatments even if you are not prone to motion sickness.
Cruise ship bag tags and a means to attach them to the luggage after flight.
Magnetic hooks, white board, or decorations, if celebrating a special event,.
On a Disney cruise, Fish Extender & gifts or Pixie Dust gifts. Costume or accessories for the Pirate Party.
On a Virgin Voyage, a red outfit for the Scarlet Party and pajamas for the PJ Party.
On Royal Caribbean, a white outfit for the white party.
2 outfits per day (if planning to freshen up mid-day during the hottest and most crowded times.)
2 pair of good walking shoes.
Portable phone chargers. At least one per person. Magic+ band chargers.
Cooling equipment like hand fans, personal electric fans or cooling towels.
Body Glide. Blister treatment.
After sun care. Epsom salts.
Rain gear/poncho
A non-toxic permanent marker.
Lanyards for key cards.
Band slides or puck holders for MagicBands.
Mouse ears. Ear or hat holder clip.
Snacks!!!
Water!!!
How you pack and manage your bags is more of an asset than what you pack.
Often when traveling on a group or guided tour, the itinerary allows only 1-2 nights per hotel. Packing and unpacking daily is a hassle. Consider bringing a smaller bag, like a backpack or duffle, inside your suitcase. Repack this with everything you need every few days. This way you don't have to mess with your large suitcase every day. You might even be able to leave it on the bus some nights.
Modesty is the soup du jour. Anytime you are planning to enter a religious church, cathedral, temple or other site there will likely be a dress code. Most often that is being covered from shoulders to knees. In hot summer months, typically adding a scarf or wrap over a tank top is good enough to cover the shoulders.
Some sites (mostly in Asian countries) require covering all the way to the wrist and ankles. In these cases a scarf or wrap will usually not be allowed.
Color is a big deal here. Dressing in certain colors can attract unwanted attention and danger. Avoid bold colors, neon colors, red, black and navy blue.
Dress the color of grass. Dead grass (beige, cream, light brown) or living grass (mid-tone to pale greens) are perfect.
High quality insect repellant.
Lemon grass soap.
Boots. Waterproof, high-tops are best.
